Sydney Sports

Rugby and football to Australians are what baseball is to Americans: a quintessential element of society. Rugby is the most watched sport on television and football (or soccer to Westerners) has been played since 1875. Children are raised to perk up at the words “footy” and “scrum.” Never mind if you have no idea what those terms mean, you are about to.

This June, several football and rugby matches will be hosted in Sydney for spectators to enjoy. On June 5, Australia’s own Qantas Wallabies will take on Scotland at Hunter Stadium. Meeting for the first time since 2009, these two stellar teams will face off to jumpstart the 2012 rugby season. Tickets may be purchased online starting at $13.00.

Australia’s favorite Sydney Swans football team will play the Geelong Cats on June 22. As a part of the Australian Football League, the Sydney Swans are the only club to have made it to every club final since 1995, excluding three games in the early 2000s. Join them at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Tickets may be purchased online starting at $25.

Sydney Film Festival

Every year, the Sydney Film Festival hosts screenings of feature films from more than 40 countries in addition to Australian films, documentaries, and restored titles. This wildly popular event began in 1954 at the University of Sydney but has since expanded to a 12-day festival that has attracted international praise and media attention. Come see why.

Although the film titles have yet to be released on the website, directors have revealed that the feature collection includes Sundance Film Festival winners, Beasts of the Southern Wind and The Law in these Parts. The full program will include over 150 titles, many of which have been submitted by local Australian producers.

To visit the festival, tickets can be purchased online. Flexipasses to the festival will be available starting May 9 and include admission to multiple if not all of the showings. Individual tickets begin at $10 and passes begin at $137. Venues include State Theater, Lower Town Hall, Event Cinemas George Street, Dendy Opera Queys, and more.
