The Best Time for Surfing in Sydney? January!
There's no better time to surf than in January. Find out where to go, how to get boards, and even where to find a great surfing school.
With the summer season starting in Sydney, everybody is grabbing their boards and going to the beach. Surfing in Sydney is wonderful because the water and weather warms up and there are tons of great surf sports and schools. Whether you're looking for beaches, a good rental place, or an all-inclusive surf-school package, you're sure to find it in Sydney.
Beaches for Surfing in Sydney
Sydney has many great beaches for surfing, no matter what type of beach you're looking for. Bondi Beach is the most famous of Sydney beaches and a favorite among many for surfing in Sydney. The size of the waves can vary, and Bondi Beach has a long, smooth, sweeping beach. If you're interested in relaxing on the beach and surfing, Bondi is a great choice.
If you're looking for a fantastic place for body surfing, head to Bronte Beach. The waves are much smaller than Bondi and often too small to really surf. This makes Bronte a great beach for body surfing.
To experience the birthplace of Australian surfing, make your way to Manly Beach. The waves can be difficult and large, but there are also gentler waves for beginners. Consider checking the online surf report before heading there.
If you want a surf adventure totally away from the city and other people, take a trip to the northernmost of Sydney Beaches, Palm Beach. The waves have a great shape and can offer long rides. Your trek out of Sydney will be worth it.
Places to Rent Surf Equipment in Sydney
You'll find numerous spots to rent equipment for surfing in Sydney. For a week-long rental consider "hiring" a surfboard. The rates tend to be cheaper for a week than day to day. Two well-known and popular surfing equipment rental companies are Sydney Surf Boards for Hire and Let's Go Surfing.
Surf Schools and Camps in Sydney
One of the best ways to get gear, a great surfing spot, and a coach is to actually join a surf school or surf
Camp. Surf schools teach surfing from the basics. While surfing in Sydney, you'll learn everything you need to know, how to paddle, how to catch a wave, how to stand up and hopefully how to turn out nicely. Fun guides teach the tricks of the trade and know how to coach. They have years of surfing and coaching experience.
When I was 12 years old, my grandparents signed me up for a week-long surf camp. Every morning, they'd drive me to beach where the rest of the kids were and leave me with a board, a lunch, and my wetsuit. The time flew by! I loved spending time on the water with fun kids who liked adventure like I did. By the end of my week-long session, I felt like a pro and had made great friends along the way. Though I don't often have time to surf anymore, I know that I have the basics down so that I can enjoy the sport forever.
There are many great schools for surfing in Sydney. If you're not sure where to look, consider Let's Go Surfing, Surf Sydney, or Manly Surf School. All offer affordable, inclusive packages and are easily accessible.
