About Sydney

Founded in the latter half of the eighteenth century as a penal colony, Sydney’s famous sites make up the backdrop of a rich history detailing crime and politics. Cradled between the Pacific Ocean and the Blue Mountains, this city enjoys a temperate climate that beckons travelers from around the globe. The city is a mix of business, adventure, suburbs and coastline. As a cosmopolitan business and trade center, the areas around central Sydney, including multiple suburbs, reflect growth and wealth.

Central Sydney

Central Sydney includes the Inner West and the Central Business District or CBD. Many travelers often make Sydney Center a home base for their travel adventures. Areas to explore in central Sydney include Circular Quay, which offers an array of snacks and meals along with  views to enjoy on foot. Walking along this area is a good way to take in the skyline. Other stops here include the Sydney Opera House and the botanical gardens, or take an official Sydney architecture walk to learn about the history behind this city’s marvelous structures.

More adventurous travelers can go on a guided climb inside the Sydney Harbour Bridge. While you’re in this area, spend some time in The Rocks, a neighborhood that tells the history of Sydney’s roots as a prisoner’s colony. Today, this district offers renowned shopping and dining options. Other places of interest include Haymarket/Chinatown and the commercial center at Pitt Street mall.

North Sydney

North Sydney includes the Upper North Shore and the Northern Suburbs. The North Shore, which runs north of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, is perhaps most well known for being the home of Toranga Zoo, which houses over 700 animals and offers a safari tour. Toranga Zoo is a must-stop for a glimpse into Australia's animal life. The North Shore is also known for prime real estate and includes immaculate homes that are worth a side trip to see.

South Sydney

South Sydney includes Southern Sydney and South-eastern Sydney, and is home to suburbs like Cronulla, Malabar and Maroubra which puts visitors right on the beach. The waves here are popular with surfers and the views from jaw-dropping cliff tops will not disappoint. Things to check out include Cronulla Beach, Botany Bay National Park and Royal National Park.

East Sydney

East Sydney is sandwiched between the city center and the coastline. Visit Bondi Beach, Moore Park, the Sydney Cricket Ground Museum and Coogee beach. Beaches and cafes combine to make for a perfect day outing.

West Sydney

West Sydney takes visitors toward the famous Blue Mountains and includes the hills, southwestern Sydney, western Sydney and greater western Sydney. Visit Olympic Park, or the old settlement at Parramatta, which boasts some of the most enchanting parks and a diverse demographic. Take a trip to Featherdale Wildlife Park to see some of Australia’s famous wildlife. Get close to a cuddly Koala or any of the other 300 spieces of animals that call this place home.
