Sydney Nightlife

Sydney residence have been known to party hard, it’s no wonder there are such an extensive life in this city. Bars, clubs, and casinos abound and there is something for everyone. Bars offer a great variety of food and drink while there are a variety of clubs to dance the night away. Sydney’s Casinos are also popular choice and often have their own entertainment venues as well. The Sydney Morning Herald and a local publication called Drum Media usually have lists of hot places, when they open, dress codes, and what to expect.

What to Wear

Australians and Sydneysiders are famously casual and the same usually apply to the dress code at many clubs and bars. In fact unless the place is super chic and high class, a pair of neat jeans and a nice T shirt should be just fine for both men and women.  In the hot summer months, shorts for men and relatively skimpy women’s outfits are usually acceptable. Be aware, though, that flip-flops are frowned upon. When in doubt get as dolled up as you like and check ahead of time before you hit the town.

Clubs

With the rise of dance music in Sydney in the 90's, clubs have become big spots to head for crowds of all ages. While they usually open around 10pm, things don't really get pumping until midnight. At one of the most famous outdoor clubs is Chinese Laundry. Another huge ruckus hot spot is Home in Darling Harbor, this spot often has live music on the weekends.  If you are looking for something smaller, check out the swanky Tanq.

Bars

Alcohol has been a huge part of Sydney’s history and continues today to be a big part of Sydney’s social scenes. Bars range in size and type from fancy up town establishments and large sports bars to quiet street corner pubs. The drink of choice is usually beer.  In Sydney the sizes are called Schooners which is the large size and comes out to 435 ml. or the smaller 285 ml. size known as a Middy.  Two bars that are considered to be good stops include the Marble Bar which is known for being rather high end and the Hero of Waterloo which has a stone interior and live music.

Casinos

Gambling at Casinos is one way to pass an evening in Sydney. The biggest in town is the Star City Casino in Darling Harbor.Another popular choice is the men’s club known Tattersalls Club, however this place is known to be rather exclusive.

Casinos and clubs have strict dress codes and there is often someone at the door to make sure you have the correct attire. Most of the time, Casinos in Sydney require you to where more formal attire for men this includes at least a pair of slacks and a nice tie for women at least a nice skirt and blouse. Sometimes, these vary so it is good to check in with the Casino beforehand.

Transportation

To get home safely and save you the headache of finding a place to park, there are plenty of other public transportation options that go late into the night.  Taxi stands are in many of the areas that are close to clubs and bars in places like Darling Harbor, Oxford Street, and The Rocks. Late night buses also run on Friday and Saturday nights and go as far out as Bondi Junction and make stops at Central Station, Town hall, and several other neighborhoods in the city.
